In this tutorial I will show you how you can create a website using the most popular content management system called WordPress.
Before we begin you will need to install WordPress on your hosting account. Most hosting companies provide a quick and simply way to install WordPress using Fantastico. It only takes 2 minutes to install and it is done automatically. If you want to install WordPress yourself you will need FTP access to your server, a FTP upload program like WINWCP or SmartFTP and your chosen browser (Firefox or Internet Explorer)
Once the WordPress installation is complete, you can begin by logging into the administration area (a.k.a. back end) of your website. To do so, simply visit your website’s login area by entering “wp-admin” after your domain name. For example, www.example.com/wp-admin. Now you can log into WordPress using the username and password you provided during the installation process.
You will then see what is called the “Dashboard”, which is the main administration screen. This section is accessible only by the administrator(s) of the website. In other words, if you would like to modify your website’s contact info, about company text or any other pages, you can do this by getting into the admin panel of your website. There are different areas for you to visit in the diverse menu items located on the left-hand navigation bar. They are:
- Dashboard - Posts - Media - Links - Pages - Comments - Appearance - Plugins - Users - Tools - Settings
To change the look and layout of your site you can simply install a new theme (template). Simply go to the Appearance - Themes section. You can also download and install free themes and premium themes directly from this area. Every WordPress theme can be customized using software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or Fireworks.
WordPress comes equipped with a multitude of plugins, too. These plugins, also known as add-ons or extensions are software scripts that add functions and events to your website. Most plugins are fairly simple to install via the WordPress Admin Plugin Screen and are generally used to add some simple organization to your posts and categories.
