You need to have a “mailto:” link on your site so that people can contact you when they have a comment or question. This requires putting your email address on the page.

But if you put your email address on your webpage, this is an invitation to the robots used by spammers. These bot are programmed with one goal: find email addresses. All they have to do on your website is look in your HTML code — the code that tells your browser what to put on the page. And they will easily find your address right there in the “mailto” link.

The old-school methods for “hiding” an email address:

* Munging. This technique doesn’t use a link at all. The email address is disguised by using words for the symbols. Example: janedoe AT yahoo DOT com

* Encoding. This is most often done by using standard ASCII code. The advantage of this code is that browsers will print the letters or symbols that they are given the ASCII code for, so the webpage shows a readable ( to humans ) email address. Consequently, the “mailto:” link can still be used. Here’s and example to show what a very simple email address a @ b.com would be coded as:

& #97; & #64; & #98; & #46; & #99; & #111; & #109; ( spaces were put in to prevent the browser from printing the actual address )

One can still use the mailto: link, since the browser recognizes this code, and prints out the actual address on the webpage.

The methods shown above are no longer viable.

Alas - the spambots have become more intelligent. The hackers who teach them have programmed them to recognize these two methods, and decode them.

Of course there have been improvements made in cloaking email addresses. Google has more than 2 million results for “hide email address”. I am sure that quite a few ingenious methods have been devised.

So what can I do now?

You don’t need to go through all of those results from Google. I devised a method which I am absolutely certain will protect your email address from any and all robots. How can I make a statement like that? Because I don’t think a hacker could easily locate the address himself, and the job of programming a robot to do it is practically insurmountable.

My method has the email address in the middle of a javascript, which is in turn located off the webpage itself, in a file that’s located in a different folder. So the robot would need to discover both the name of the folder and the name of the file. Yet even though the address is not located anywhere in the HTML code of the page, it DOES appear - almost like magic - on the page itself. But a robot doesn’t have eyes to see it!

One common document method is the write() method which is used to output a text string to an HTML document. The document object forms part of the Document Object Model (DOM), a logical hierarchy representing an HTML page and the elements it displays which makes it possible for scripting languages like JavaScript to access and manipulate elements.

In the DOM, the HTML document is seen as being composed of nodes arranged in a hierarchy, each of which can be accessed in a number of ways. For example, a node can be viewed as child or parent of another node or it could be referred to by its ID or its name. Since the document represents the entire HTML page, many of its properties are actually collections of other objects. For example, the anchors property is an array of all the named anchor objects on a page.

The cookie property of the document object is used to set and read cookies, small files which are stored on the user’s computer (with their permission) and which can store information such as the user’s preferences. There is also a domain property which automatically holds the domain name which contains the page currently being displayed in the browser. The value of document.domain can be read at any time to obtain this information.

Two examples of properties which are really collections are the forms and images properties of the document object. These are arrays containing all the forms and images on a page, respectively. To count the number of forms or images on a page, you can use the length property of these arrays: document.forms.length or document.images.length. A length of zero would indicate that no forms/images are present on the page.

In a similar way, the document object has a links property which is an array containing all the hyperlinks on a page. Hyperlinks may be placed on text, images or imagemap hotspots. As with other arrays, you can use the length property to count the number of hyperlinks on a page.

The referrer property holds the value of the URL which the user was viewing prior to accessing the current page. This is only useful when the user has clicked a link to get to the page. For as long as I can remember, there has been a controversy over whether clicking an offsite link should cause a new window to open, or whether the same window should be used for the new website. But on closer analysis, there really is not a controversy.

The “controversy”:

Most proponents of using a new window are website owners, while those favoring use of the same window are web-standards supporters, often the web designers themselves.

The usual reason for favoring a new window opening is that the owner of the website is afraid of losing viewers. If the link opens in the same window, then the viewer has left his website. Of course, this does not mean that the viewer is gone forever. To my knowledge, there is no evidence for or against this.

Web designers are often against using a new window since the W3C, which attempts to set web standards, has declared that the target attribute used to open a new window is no longer allowed.

In addition to this argument, the web designer usually points out that the viewer has two ways of dealing with an off-site link. He can choose to just click it, with the idea of using his BACK button to return to the original website. Or he can right-click the link and choose “Open in a New Window”.

Here’s why there really isn’t any “controversy”:

The target attribute was deprecated by the W3C because HTML - the language the consortium is concerned with - is not supposed to deal with anything but WHAT appears in the browser window. Other things like HOW the content is shown, and WHERE it is shown are the province of other systems.

CSS dictates HOW web page information is shown. And everything else is done through the DOM. Therefore, what happens when a link is clicked is rightly the province of scripting.

So there really is not a controversy at all. Off-site links can be opened in a new window by using scripting. This will not even be noticed by webpage validators, since it is not done through HTML at all. For an easy way to legitimately open a link either way, see the paragraph below.
