ACS, Inc. Designs a One-Screen Program That Turns Your Computer File System Upside Down

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

We all know time is a precious commodity and wasting it is not an option in this day and age. Every second counts. This fact is one of the very reasons why Applied Computer Systems, Inc., a company of 39 years, has designed a new way of using a computer. The conventional way of looking at a filing cabinet and its folders within a computer has been thrown overboard, metaphorically of course, by turning the filing system UPSIDE DOWN!

This program has made playing hide-and-seek with your files a game of the past. Now finding that one file you need is easy as double-clicking a filename on an easy-to-use screen. Gone are the days of searching your computer’s directory and plotting a course through folder after folder just to get a single filename to load.

Currently, there are folders on your PC that contain your files. Folders help to know what types of files it contains and can be very helpful, when correctly titled. Still, users often have to track their way through a labyrinth of folders to find a single file. Ultimately it is the filename the user needs to open to verify the contents. This is unnecessary and uses up all of a user’s patience and sanity. Using a ’search method’ is usually implemented as a last resort.

Why not place the assorted filenames into specific extension columns? It is unnecessary to search through dozens of extensions when the user is sure the file they are searching for is in a document type extension (.doc). This is why the folders were thrown away leaving only the filenames to be viewed. The user wants lot of filenames on one screen. Sounds simple enough, doesn’t it?

The existing system deficit is why this radical new approach was taken. Four equal columns are displayed to the user on one screen. One extension (.mp3, .xls, .doc, etc.) of the user’s choosing is contained in each column. The user can sort each column from one of ten different ways. A column contains 40 filenames of a selectable extension at one time with thousands of filenames instantly at hand behind each file extension. A file can be easily and quickly launched by double-clicking on the filename. This saves you time and is undemanding.

This program also allows users to view and organize pictures by only using their UPDOWN keys and they are able to view the pictures at full or half screen. One can seek out duplicate filenames in your extensions and even sequence the filenames of your photos. Properties of a filename are visible at the bottom of the screen by using ‘mouse over.’

Most user procedures involve “common sense” keyboard strokes and mouse clicks followed by some type of action on one screen. FileButler reduces a user’s time on the PC, but some still may voice the question- why? Why do computer users really need FileButler?

“You don’t, but you could be a much more enjoyable and productive employee if you did-you could operate your computer faster, every day, month after month,” answers creator, designer and president of Applied Computer Systems, Inc., Donald D. Lacy. He further comments, “FileButler was a necessity! With thousands of documents, spreadsheets, pictures, videos, music titles and other types of files on my PC, it took too long to locate the desired filename. Why not let the computer perform the task of organizing and displaying the filenames on one screen? That is what computers do best-sort, calculate, display and serve you. As a user, all I want to do is click on the filename!” It was with this and much more reasoning that the FileButler program became a reality- Always Ready to Serve You!

The simplest way to do this, and the most obvious to typical internet users may be to simply type in a Google query to the tune of “Rapidshare [desired file's name]“. However, while this can find some files, it fails for a few reasons. Namely, it requires digging, patience, and skill - things a searcher may not have in great supply.

A better way is to make use of websites that index Rapidshare links and provide links to files hosted there. Those are specialized websites that are far more likely to yield the results that many users are looking for.

There are hundreds of websites that provides links to files that are hosted on Rapidshare. They can be found by search for terms like Rapidshare search on most major search engines. The list will be massive and it definitely takes some time to look through it finding the best sites. These sites use a different strategy than the usual search engines as they concentrate on links that point to one site only.

They utilize bots that crawl for files that are hosted on Rapidshare. Another source are user submissions that they add to their file databases. These sites add links all the time to their databases checking if they are still valid before they are added to ensure that only valid file links are presented to the searcher.

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

RapidShare allows user to send large files quickly, easily, and securely. Members are able to upload files up to 100 MB in size. After uploading a file, each user is supplied with a unique URL, allowing anyone the user shares it with to download the file.

A click on the browse button on the Rapidshare homepage will start the process of uploading files to Rapidshare. It will open a file browser that can be used to pick a file on the local computer that should be uploaded. Clicking on the upload button will transfer the selected file to Rapidshare.

Once the uploading process is complete, a new window will appear containing both a delete link and save link. I recommend saving both links because it will allow you to delete the file later or download it again in the future.

The link that is pointing to the file can then be send to to friends, colleagues or other users who can use it to download the file from the file hoster. Rapidshare does offer a way to send those links using an embedded email form on their pages.

It is generally recommended to avoid downloading and uploading files at the same time as an error in one connection will affect the other as well meaning that both processes will stop. It is also a good idea to stop bandwidth intensive tasks while uploading to the file hoster to speed up the upload.

Most users that upload files to Rapidshare do it to share the files with other users. There are however some users who upload movies, games or music to Rapidshare because of the large file size offered by the service.

Some users exploit the large file size limit of Rapidshare by uploading copyrighted files to the file hoster. Rapidshare was already involved in several law suits because of this behavior.

Rapidshare will automatically and manually delete files that violate copyright laws but the sheer number of uploaded files make the endeavor difficulty. Users are also bypassing the controls by password protecting or renaming the files before uploading them.

It is usually advised to avoid titles that might hint at copyright violations even if the files are not copyrighted at all. It is also common to upload files larger than 100 Megabytes as multiple parts by using archivers.

The Rapidshare service is an easy way to make files available on the Internet without having a homepage. Users of any experience levels can use the service to upload their files easily.
